James S. Guy (Faculty)

The P.P. Levine Award is presented each year to the senior author of the best paper published in Avian Diseases, as determined by the AAAP Awards Committee. This award is named for Dr. P.P. Levine, the founder and first editor of Avian Diseases. The journal was first published in May 1957 from Cornell University, where Dr. Levine earned his DVM and PhD degrees and spent most of his professional career. Papers are evaluated and the winner is selected based on four criteria: Clear statement of objectives; originality of approach; clarity of presentation of data; and impact of results on science. The winning paper selected from Volume 51 of Avian Diseases was entitled:  Experimental Reproduction of Transmissible Viral Proventriculitis by Infection of Chickens with a Novel Adeno-like Virus (Isolate R11/3).  The senior author of this paper, and the recipient of the 2008 P.P. Levine Award, is Dr. James S. Guy. Dr. Guy received both his DVM and PhD degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1980 and 1984, respectively. Dr. Guy has been a Professor at North Carolina State University since 1984, and is currently in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology. His primary research focus is on: Proventriculitis in broiler chickens, Coronavirus and astrovirus infections of turkeys, Infectious laryngotracheitis virus, and enteric diseases of turkeys. Dr. Guy’s co-authors on this paper were Lynda G. Smith, Maria E. Evans and H. John Barnes.  This work was conducted at the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
