Two NC State College of Veterinary Medicine students have received this year’s scholarship from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and Merck Animal Health.

The Class of 2022’s Paola Cruz Ramos and the Class of 2021’s Alexandra Fitton are among 54 veterinary students worldwide honored with the $5,000 scholarship, awarded annually.

Recipients are second- or third-year students planning careers in companion animal or large animal medicine.

“Veterinarians play a critical role not only within the animal health industry, but also within society,” Scott Bormann, North America senior vice president of Merck Animal Health, said in a statement. “[We] are proud to support these students in their educational pursuits and look forward to the impact they will make.”

Recipients are selected based on academic excellence, financial need and leadership qualities. Cruz Ramos has also been an Annable Scholar for the past two years. Fitton has received accolades for her work in dairy animal health and farm management and earned a scholarship last year from Zoetis and the Association of American Veterinary Colleges.

With this year’s honors, eight NC State DVM students have won the scholarship since 2017.
