New to the CVM Family: Meet Erin Hopmans

Erin Hopmans, a new Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center floor technician from Hinsdale, Mass., was looking for a change: a change of scenery, a change of pace, a change of species.

When she saw an opportunity to work at NC State, she couldn’t wait to apply. For Hopmans, the NC State Veterinary Hospital was just the change she needed. She’s excited to work with horses at a place that helps her become an even better technician every day.

What made you want to go into veterinary medicine?

I’ve always wanted a career working with horses, but I chose to go into the veterinary field because I felt it challenged me. There is always something new coming through the door, so no day is ever the same.

What will you be doing in your new role?

I am responsible for monitoring all the patients in the hospital, giving hourly treatments and assisting with emergency patients.

What are you most excited about in your new role?

I am most excited about participating in the more critical cases that come to the EFAVC and seeing them through to the end.

What is your background?

I completed my bachelor’s of technology in animal science at SUNY Cobleskill in New York state in 2018. Then after graduation, I spent a year working as a veterinary assistant at an ambulatory practice in New York. During my summers while in college, I also spent time on a thoroughbred horse breeding farm in Saratoga, N.Y., prepping yearlings for sale.

What’s something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

I like to paint portraits of animals when I have spare time.

When you’re not on campus, where could we find you?

I’m either riding horses or playing with my new beagle puppy, Louie. He loves any attention people give him.
