Over the past four years, the COVID-19 pandemic presented some obstacles for the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2023, but the students have made it to the finish line and will celebrate their achievements with an Oath and Hooding ceremony May 5.

The event will be at 5 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum on NC State University’s main campus. Students will receive their DVM degrees during the university’s commencement at 9 a.m. May 6 at PNC Arena.

A class of 92 students will be hooded before reciting the Veterinarian’s Oath. It is the college’s 39th graduating class.

Of those who have identified an area of concentration, 39 have chosen small animal medicine, typically the most popular. Eight are concentrating on mixed animal medicine, with 14 choosing small and exotic animal, nine food animal, nine zoological medicine and seven equine medicine. Others are interested in laboratory research, pathology and epidemiology.

Whatever professional paths they follow, they will all share in having taken the Veterinarian’s Oath:

Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.

I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.

I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.

The May 5 Oath and Hooding Ceremony will also be streamed live here: https://go.ncsu.edu/cvm23.
