Gilger Awarded Prestigious Ocular Medicine Fellowship
NC State College of Veterinary Medicine’s Brian Gilger has been honored with a Gold Fellowship from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the world’s largest ocular research organization.
Gilger, a professor of ophthalmology at the CVM, is just the second-ever veterinarian to receive the Gold Fellowship, ARVO’s highest member honor.
“Through ARVO, I have met many influential people who have greatly enhanced my research program,” says Gilger. “This has substantially improved the health of veterinary patients and ultimately humans.”
The fellowship honors ARVO members for extraordinary accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the association. Fellows from around the world mentor those interested in careers in vision and ophthalmology research. Gilger is one of 20 receiving this year’s Gold Fellowship.
Gilger has been an ARVO member since 1989 and has chaired several of its committees. Founded in 1928, ARVO’s membership includes 11,000 researchers from more than 75 countries.
“I am very proud of this accomplishment and look forward to many more productive and collaborative years with ARVO,” says Gilger.
Gilger, who joined the CVM in 1995, is a world-leading expert in equine eye health, research and ocular drug development. His CVM lab focuses on researching common yet traumatic ocular diseases, including immune-mediated corneal disease and fungal keratitis. Gilger and his team regularly work with pharmaceutical companies to develop innovative eye treatments, including gene therapy.
A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and the American Board of Toxicology, Gilger has authored more than 165 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts.
Past honors include the Clinical Research Award from the American Veterinary Medical Association and distinguished alumnus awards from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Ohio State University.
