Kimberly Schreiber, a second-year student in the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine, is one of five national recipients of the 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Scholarship.

Presented by American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, the 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Scholarship supports veterinary students who have previously conducted a summer research project and are seeking to gain a second summer of research experience.

The award involves a $5,000 scholarship and a $1,000 stipend to attend the 2016 National Institutes of Health Symposium.

Schreiber will use the funds to continue her research into the role of multi-copy, single-stranded DNA in Salmonella pathogenesis, an investigation she has undertaken in the laboratory of Johanna Elfenbein, an equine internal medicine specialist and assistant professor of equine medicine.

NC State CVM graduate research assistant Amanda Kortum received the recognition in 2015.
