CVM Student Selected Alternate Student Delegate for AASV Board

Emily Mahan-Riggs, a student at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Student Recruitment Committee as the incoming Alternate Student Delegate to the AASV Board of Directors.

Mahan-Riggs, Class of 2017, will assume her duties during the 2015 AASV Annual Meeting to be held Feb. 28 to March 3 in Orlando. She will represent student interests as a non-voting member of the AASV Board of Directors and will become a full delegate in 2016.

Active in the NC State Student Chapter of the AASV, Mahan-Riggs recently completed an internship with Prestage Farms investigating seasonal infertility. Her experience in swine medicine includes working with caesarian-derived, colostrum-deprived transgenic and wild type piglets. She also created her own line of transgenic pigs to be used for human cardiovascular research and interned with Danbred North America (now DNA Genetics) to monitor the terminal traits of their maternal lines of pigs.

After completing the DVM degree, Mahan-Riggs plans an industry career supporting the health and well-being of all ages of pigs while helping clients achieve and maintain profitable farms. She also plans to complete the Executive Veterinary Program in Swine Health Management as well as become a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners certified in Swine Health Management.

The AASV has approximately 1,300 members involved in practice, industry, and academia in more than 40 countries and is active supporting future swine veterinarians through scholarships, programs, and the student chapters at U.S. colleges of veterinary medicine.
