Welcome to the CVM Family: Meet Brandi Bush

New to the CVM Family

Brandi Bush comes to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine as its house officer coordinator after 18 years in human health care, most recently as program manager for the pediatric residency program at Inova Children’s Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.

Having worked previously in other administrative roles, she discovered that the change was a good fit.

“I found that I really enjoyed working with students,” she says.

The transition from there to her current position at the CVM was a natural progression. As the house officer coordinator she is the main administrative contact for CVM house officers’ questions or concerns, whether professional or personal. Or as Bush describes it, she’s “momma bear.”

At the CVM, a house officer is a veterinary graduate receiving additional training as a resident or an intern in the veterinary hospital, providing medical services to patients under the supervision of a senior clinician. There are 116 house officers at the NC State Veterinary Hospital.

She also serves as assistant to Steve Marks, associate dean and director of veterinary medical services.

Making the situation more challenging, Bush began working at NC State on March 23 — one week before the order for all employees who could to start working from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But she keeps a positive attitude.

“I’m very happy to be able to be here during these trying times for everyone,” she says. “Working at home at first was OK, but now I’m coming into the office, and that has helped a lot.”

What are you most excited about in your new role?

The people. I have a thing for working with people. Plus if you have a love for animals, as I do, that makes it even more perfect.

What’s something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m the mother of three kids, ages 21, 19 and 9. My oldest son is in college at Fairmont State University, my daughter is in the military in South Korea and my youngest son is in the fourth grade.

When you’re not on campus, where could we find you?

On a nature trail. I love walking about 3 or 4 miles at least four days a week.

Tell us about your pets.

I have a Lab mix puppy named Koda. He’s a momma’s boy.
