Welcome Class of 2014!
The 80 members of the Class of 2014 are now immersed in their first-year studies at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine following the traditional welcoming during the Annual White Coat Ceremony in early August.
An analysis of the class indicates that 85% are women (68 women, 12 men), 79% are North Carolina residents (63 residents, 17 non-residents), 88% have Bachelor of Science degrees (70 B.S., five B.A., five M.S.).
Six students are Food Animal Scholars and two are Laboratory Animal Scholars. Animal Science (32), Biology (23), and Zoology (5) are the most common major field of study in the group. Other majors include but are not limited to English, Business, Poultry Science, Philosophy, Biomedical Engineering, Human Ecology, Engineering, and Music.
Class members represent 38 different higher education institutions with 27 students coming from NC State and six from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. UNC-Chapel Hill, Cornell, College of William and Mary, and the University of Florida are represented by three students each while Duke, University of Virginia, and Clemson each contributed two students. The 29 institutions sending individual students include Harvard, Stanford, and the U.S. Naval Academy. Two students come from universities in Puerto Rico and one from Canada.
Among those declaring focus areas, 26 say they are interested in either mixed (16) or food animal medicine (10), 14 are interested in small animal medicine, five are interested in lab animal medicine and five in equine medicine, four in research and four in pathology, and three expressed an interest in public health careers.
