Takumu Niino (Resident 2012-14)
Dr. Takumu Niino was a recipient of the 2013 Reed Rumsey Student Award for Clinical Research. The Reed Rumsey Student Award for the Advancement of Avian Medicine was established in memory of Dr. Reed Rumsey, President of the AAAP in 1979.
Dr. Rumsey had great faith in young people as the future of the poultry industry, and he established this award to encourage and recognize the contribution of students beginning their careers in avian medicine. The recipient must be a veterinary student or have received the DVM degree and must be engaged in original research or a case study as a veterinary student, intern, resident or graduate student.
Dr. Niino earned his BS from Washington State University and his DVM from the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently in a Poultry Health Management Residency at NCSU CVM. A previous winner of an AAAP Kenneth Eskelund Preceptorship Scholarship, Dr. Niino is using morphometric and functional analysis to assess poult intestinal health. His long term goal is to secure a position in the United Nations Food and Animal Organization (FAO), like his father, and focus on sustainable animal agriculture and international development of agricultural systems.
