Stems Cells and Regenerative Medicine at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Jorge Piedrahita is a member of the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine team developing a program in regenerative medicine.

Stem cells and regenerative medicine is a highly interdisciplinary field requiring a combination of clinical skills, basic knowledge of stem cell behavior in vivo, and novel engineering solutions.

We are fortunate at North Carolina State University to have outstanding faculty that excel in all of the required areas. It is our goal to develop an internationally recognized program in this exciting area.

While drug-based therapies will continue to play a significant role in the treatment of disease, cell-based therapies are increasingly being utilized to enhance or replace damaged tissues and organs. This field offers tremendous potential for the treatment of multiple diseases that affect both humans and animals. Implementation of this new technology can only be accomplished if we develop a highly interdisciplinary team capable of excelling in this area.

The Center for Comparative Medicine and Translational Research (CCMTR), initiated by the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, involves more than 100 research scientists from five NC State colleges. Most recently, the CCMTR has led an effort to build auniversity-wide program in regenerative medicine. We have developed partnerships with the College of Engineering, the College of Textiles, and the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Our goal is to move this exciting technology to the clinics so patients can benefit from these advances.

Before we can successfully implement this type of technol0gyin a clinical setting, it is critical that we carry out research on the safety and efficacy of the procedures being developed. To do this we are applying for funding from multiple agencies but we are still in need of research support and support for specialized facilities and equipment.
