Ophthalmology Service at NC State Terry Center Offers Treatment and Research Leadership

A veterinary ophthalmologist is a specialist certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists who treats eye diseases in all species of animals, with particular emphasis on those occurring in companion animals.

Examples of common eye disorders include dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma, inflammation, tumors, eyelid abnormalities, retinal diseases, and blindness. The NC State University  Ophthalmology Service at the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center combines world-renown veterinary ophthalmologists with state-of-the-science diagnostic and surgical equipment, instrumentation, and advanced surgical techniques.

Treatments available through the Ophthalmology Service include, but are not limited to, cataract removal and intraocular lens implantation, glaucoma implants and laser procedures, and correction of abnormalities in eyelid conformation, as well as medical treatments for a variety of ocular conditions [keratoconjunctivitis sicca (‘dry eye’), inflammatory ocular diseases, glaucoma, etc.].

The service also performs breed certification eye examinations (CERF exams) to screen for inherited or congenital eye disorders, which is particularly important for dogs participating in breeding programs.

In addition to clinical service, the ophthalmologists and staff at the Terry Center are involved in leading research projects, including investigations into novel treatments for inflammatory diseases of the eye, drug delivery to the eye, advanced imaging techniques, and surgical techniques for glaucoma. The goal of this research is to advance the ability to treat ocular diseases in all animals, thus providing a better quality of life.

While Terry Center ophthalmologists lecture world-wide on veterinary eye diseases and oversee leading ophthalmology research and training programs, their primary focus remains providing accessible, first-rate care and compassion to you and your pet.
