NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and the Era of Specialization
The Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center.
Veterinary medicine has experienced something of an explosion in specialization since NC State University opened its Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 1983, according to Dr. Michael Davidson, associate dean and director of medical services on the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Centennial Biomedical Campus.
“It was a totally different era in veterinary medicine and the VTH essentially was designed and operated as a large general practice,” says Dr. Davidson.
The VTH was replaced in 2011 by the 110,000-square foot Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center. At more than twice the size of the original VTH, the new facility is one of the nation’s largest—and most sophisticated—veterinary hospitals.
The Terry Center is an integrated collection of specialty healthcare clinics that reflect the advances in veterinary technology. Each service was designed after consulting with the clinical faculty and staff and includes state-of-the-science technology and features that support that specialization valued by referring veterinarians and their clients.

With its focus on companion animals, the Terry Center is part of the Veterinary Health Complex which includes the Veterinary Health and Wellness Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. Preparing the next generation of veterinarians, veterinary specialists, and veterinary researchers is why the State of North Carolina established the highly-ranked College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State. The Terry Center and other components of the Veterinary Health Complex and College of Veterinary Medicine represent an educational and research enterprise that seeks to enhance animal and human health and well-being.
