NC State Farm Days Offer Fun, Educational Experience for Kids

The third annual NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Farm Animal Day was held on Saturday, April 30. Hosted by the Bovine Club at the CVM, 43 kids from around the Triangle experienced a fun and educational day of working on a farm. With the guidance of veterinary students and ruminant medicine faculty members, they were introduced to different aspects of becoming a large animal veterinarian. They participated in several lessons including conducting physical exams on goats and sheep, cattle handling skills and farm animal anatomy, as well as how to milk a dairy cow. A fistulated steer was also present, to help teach kids about ruminant physiology and digestion.

Most veterinary dreams start long before the training does and at this annual fundraising and educational event, NC State CVM students got a chance to reflect on their initial dreams of becoming a veterinarian, by teaching the future of veterinary medicine.

Farm Animal Day is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association and hosted by the NC State CVM Student Chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners.
