NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Appoints Associate Dean, Director of Academic Affairs
Dr. Keven Flammer has been appointed Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs for the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The appointment by Dean Paul Lunn is effective April 1, 2013.
“It’s a great opportunity for this College and our DVM student body to have Dr. Keven Flammer permanently appointed to this position,” says Dean Lunn. “We are in the process of a significant evolution of our curriculum that will ensure NC State continues to deliver an outstanding veterinary education product. Goal one is to enhance the success of our students through educational innovation and Dr. Flammer has the credentials, enthusiasm, and energy to ensure the success of this critical initiative.”
A professor of companion and wild avian medicine, Dr. Flammer joined the CVM faculty in1984, a year before the initial graduating class. He is a board-certified specialist in avian medicine with a research focus in infectious disease and drug pharmacology of nondomestic birds. He is a recipient of the Excellence in Avian Research Award from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
Dr. Flammer has been involved in veterinary education initiatives at NC State since the 1980s when he created a DVM student instructional program, a clinical service, and started the first avian residency program. He served on the Faculty Committee on Curriculum and Course Evaluation beginning in 2005, became chair of the committee in 2007, and led a review of the DVM curriculum.
Dr. Flammer has been serving as the Acting Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs since 2009 when prior Dean Warwick Arden’s appointment as Acting Provost at NC State led to college leadership transitions.
In his acting capacity, Dr. Flammer mentored students facing academic and life challenges; maintained a highly competitive admission process leading to an increased intake of North Carolina students; provided leadership for numerous faculty initiatives, including curriculum evolution and growth; and managed what Dean Lunn calls the College’s most critical enterprise—the delivery of DVM education.
In the permanent position, Dr. Flammer will direct a multi-year process to implement a new curriculum that will increase focus on skills such as clinical reasoning and communication while integrating contemporary and innovative educational techniques into teaching.
Dr. Flammer graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1976 and received his DVM degree from the University of California, Davis in 1980. He directed veterinary services for an exotic bird research and breeding center in California for four years before joining the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.
