Meet the Class of 2020

They hail from Morehouse College, Yale University, the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez.

And, of course, North Carolina State University.

They’ve previously studied animal science and biology, zoology and psychology. They have master’s degrees; one has a juris doctorate. One is a Tillman Scholar. Most are North Carolina residents, but nearly a quarter are from out of state.

They’ll soon don their ceremonial white coats. In four years they will hold doctoral degrees from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

CVM’s newest students, first walking the halls and entering labs on Aug. 10, make up the fifth 100-member class in the school’s 35-year history.

• There were 891 applicants for 100 seats: 212 from North Carolina and 679 from out of state.
• The non-North Carolina residents come from 12 different states. Two students hail from Puerto Rico.
• The class includes 77 women and 23 men.
• 35 come from N.C. State. 28 come from other North Carolina colleges.
• 43 students majored in animal science as undergraduates. Other popular undergraduate majors include biology/biological science (34) and zoology (5).
• 6 students have earned additional degrees: 2 associate’s degrees, 3 master’s degrees and 1 juris doctorate of law.
• There is wide diversity in area of interest. At time of application, 31 were interested in small animals, 25 in mixed animals, 11 in zoological medicine and 10 in food animals.
• For the first time in CVM history, the Class of 2020 will be sorted into 4 houses.
• 22: The age of class of 2020 member and Tillman Scholar Amie Pflaum in 2006, when she joined the Army’s Aviation Corps as an active duty Blackhawk helicopter pilot.
