Keven Flammer Stepping Down as Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs for the College of Veterinary Medicine

Professor Keven Flammer is stepping down from his position as Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs for North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The move is effective May 1st, 2016. Professor Flammer will return to the faculty in the Department of Clinical Sciences.

Dr. Flammer joined college administration in the Academic Affairs office in December 2009 during a time of leadership change. He initially served as the Acting Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs before being permanently appointed to the position by Dean Paul Lunn on April 1, 2013.

“The College of Veterinary Medicine has been incredibly fortunate to have had Dr. Keven Flammer as the leader of our DVM educational program during the past six years,” says Dean Lunn. “He played an enormous role in implementing major changes to the DVM curriculum to ensure that we have the best possible contemporary educational programs for our students. Dr. Flammer also oversaw a major enrollment increase, the expansion of primary care medicine services and teaching, and the hiring new kinds of education professionals who are greatly enhancing the DVM program. The good news is that Dr. Flammer will be very much engaged in the DVM program in the future, in a new role that we’ll announce later this Spring.”

A professor of avian medicine, Flammer joined the CVM in 1984—8 months before the initial graduating class—to develop a teaching, research, and clinical program in avian medicine. He is board-certified with a research focus in infectious disease and pharmacology of nondomestic birds.

Among his achievements, he is a recipient of the Excellence in Avian Research Award from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the TJ Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Avian Veterinarians.

Flammer is passionate about applying evidence-based methods to the education of veterinary students. He served on the Faculty Committee on Curriculum and Course Evaluation beginning in 2005, became chair of the committee in 2007, and led a review of the DVM curriculum.

A 1976 graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, Flammer received his DVM degree from the University of California, Davis in 1980. He directed veterinary services for an exotic bird research and breeding center in California for four years before joining NC State University.

Dr. Jennifer Neel, currently the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, will take up the position of Interim Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs effective May 1st, 2016, pending the outcome of a national search to permanently fill the position.
