Keene Named Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professor for Companion Animal Medicine

Bruce W. Keene, a professor of cardiology, has been named the Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professor for Companion Animal Medicine at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
“I am pleased to announce that Dr. Bruce Keene has been named the Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professor,” says Dean Paul Lunn. “He is an internationally recognized veterinary cardiologist whose keen sense of discovery, combined with his clinical acumen, has made him a leading innovator in veterinary and comparative cardiology.
“In addition to his significant research advances, Dr. Keene demonstrates an exemplary commitment to clinical teaching,” Dean Lunn continues. “He has made huge contributions through the training of house officers and other cardiologists and has helped ensure our Cardiology Service enjoys an outstanding reputation for clinical excellence. I can think of no better recipient of the Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professorship than Bruce Keene”
Dr. Keene–a pioneer in interventional cardiology, metabolic treatment of cardiac disease, and clinical trial design–is the author of five patents, one book, 34 book chapters, and 117 peer-reviewed publications that to date have been cited more than 900 times. He has served as the principal investigator or co-investigator in numerous studies funded by foundation, industry, and federal awards while maintaining a heavy rotation schedule in the NC State Veterinary Hospital’s Cardiology Service. He also serves as an adjunct professor in the Duke Department of Pediatrics.
In the past decade Dr. Keene has been invited to deliver plenary keynote presentations to the British Cardiovascular Society, the Japanese Society of Veterinary Cardiology, the Free University of Berlin, and twice to the World Small Animal Veterinary Congress.
Dr. Keene joined NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. He received his DVM and Master’s degrees from Ohio State University in 1979 and completed his internship at the Animal Medical Center of New York in 1980. Both Ohio State and Animal Medical Center have honored him with Distinguished Alumnus Awards. Dr. Keene became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Medicine in cardiology in 1983, and he is a past president of that organization.
Bruce Keene is the second recipient of this distinguished professorship, following in the footsteps of his colleague, Dr. Clarke Atkins.
The Jane Lewis Seaks distinguished professorship was established in 2008 by Dr. Terry G. Seaks—a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation Board of Directors—to honor Jane Lewis Seaks, his wife of 38 years, and in recognition of the care their family pets received at the North Carolina State Veterinary Hospital.
The $1 million endowed professorship is made possible through a financial arrangement in which a donation of appreciated securities by Terry and Jane Seaks is matched by an unrestricted gift from the R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation and the University of North Carolina General Administration through its Distinguished Professor Endowment Trust Fund.
