Journal of Visualized Experiments Profiles CVM Research Technique

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JOVE) published a procedure article by Dr. Troy Ghashghaei and research associate Benoit Jacquet titled,” An Organotypic Slice Assay for High-Resolution Time-Lapse Imaging of Neuronal Migration in the Postnatal Brain.”

JOVE combines written protocols with videos in which all protocols are performed for a visual experience. Dr. Ghashghaei’s CVM lab was the first from NC State University to publish an article/video in the journal. The presentation describes a new way of using an organotypic slice assay optimized for postnatal brain tissue to “study the migration of new neurons into the olfactory bulb under various genetic and molecular perturbations.”

The information will be a useful resource for scientists attempting similar experiments and the approach can be modified to study stem cell transplantation, cell migration, dendritic/axonal outgrowth, and other topics in development and adult neurogenesis. CVM videographer Phillip Ruckart shot and produced the video.

Dr. Ghashghaei is an assistant professor in the CVM Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences and a member of the Center for Comparative Medicine and Translational Research.
