Guy Receives Phibro Lifetime Achievement Award
James Guy, professor of poultry health management at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, has received the 2017 Phibro Animal Health Excellence in Poultry Research Award presented by the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP). The formal presentation was made at the organization’s annual meeting in July in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sponsored by the Phibro Animal Health Corporation, the award is given for “sustained excellence in research in poultry disease and health” over a period of at least 20 years.
Guy has been a member of the CVM faculty since 1984, and is in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology. His primary research focus is on: proventriculitis in broiler chickens, coronavirus and astrovirus infections of turkeys, infectious laryngotracheitis virus, and enteric diseases of turkeys — diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems with implications for the safety of the human food supply.
Board certified by both the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, Guy holds both a DVM and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
Guy was honored for his body of research work on infectious diseases of poultry, particularly his contributions related to the laryngotracheitis virus, a highly contagious infection that causes severe inflammation of the larynx and trachea in chickens. His work has been instrumental in the development of numerous treatments and prevention techniques. He reacted humbly to the announcement, saying simply “Of course, it’s gratifying any time you are recognized by your peers.”
Founded in 1957, the AAAP promotes scientific knowledge to enhance the health, well-being, and productivity of poultry to provide safe and abundant food for the world.
