Global Health at the Animal-Human Interface Seminar Topic
Guy Palmer, director of the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health at Washington State University, will discuss “Global Health at the Animal-Human Interface” at 3 p.m. this Thursday (April 24) in the South Theater at the NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Palmer is the founding director of the Allen School and currently leads disease control programs in East Africa and Latin America as well as directing the Robert R. Fast Laboratory at Washington State University.
He heads the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Training Program in Infectious Diseases and Microbial Immunology and holds an NIH MERIT award for research on pathogen emergence. Dr. Palmer is also a faculty member of the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology in Arusha Tanzania.
Dr. Palmer focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to improving public health and human opportunity. His current research programs include:
- Intersection of animal and human health programs to improve nutrition, prevent zoonotic disease, and increase access to education.
- Impact of livestock diseases on household economic and food security.
- Rabies control in East Africa.
- Influenza epidemiology and community engagement in Central America.
Dr. Palmer holds the Jan and Jack Creighton Endowed Chair at Washington State University where he is Regents Professor of Pathology & Infectious Diseases and Bioinformatics & Computational Biology. He serves on the Board on Global Health at the National Academies and is the incoming Chair of the Global Health, Infectious Diseases, and Microbiology Group in the Institute of Medicine.
