Gigi Davidson Appointed to FDA Advisory Committee

Gigi Davidson, Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at North Carolina State University’s Veterinary Hospital, has been appointed to the 14-member U.S. Food and Drug Administration Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee, a group charged with implementing the compounding provisions of the Drug Quality and Security Act of 2013.

Committee membership is limited to experts in pharmaceutical compounding and manufacturing, pharmacy, medicine, pharmaceutical regulation and related specialties who advise the commissioner of food and drugs on scientific, technical, and medical issues concerning drug compounding for human use.

Charged with implementing the compounding provisions of the Drug Quality and Security Act of 2013, members include representatives from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), pharmacists with current experience and expertise in compounding, physicians with background and knowledge in compounding, and patient and public health advocacy organizations.

Davidson also serves as chair of Pharmacy Compounding for the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Council of Experts. Her five-year term ends June, 2015. The USP is a nonprofit organization that sets standards for the identity, strength, quality, and purity of medicines, manufactured, distributed, and consumed worldwide.
