Faculty, Staff and Students honored at 34th Annual CVM Awards Banquet
The State Ballroom of NC State’s Talley Student Union featured a spontaneous rendition of “Happy Birthday” on April 26 during the 34th Annual College of Veterinary Medicine Awards Banquet.
The Class of 2018’s Sophie Amirsultan took home seven awards while also celebrating her birthday, prompting the crowd to join in a musical tribute.
The entire evening took on a festive mood as students and faculty were honored for an array of accomplishments made during this past academic year. Faculty, students and corporate sponsors were involved in selecting the recipients of the lengthy list of awards, most of which accompanied by plaques and certificates, with several including cash awards for students.
Perennial event emcee Greg Lewbart, professor of aquatic animal medicine, kept the program moving forward swiftly, even sporting a blowgun to encourage presenters to keep remarks short.
The presentations culminated with the three highest awards for faculty members. This year’s Huffman Leadership Award was presented to one faculty member, Brian Gilger, professor of ophthalmology, and one staff member, Jim Brawley, director of administration at the NC State Veterinary Hospital.
The Zoetis Animal Health Award for Research Excellence was presented to Ke Chang, associate professor of regenerative medicine. The Zoetis Distinguished Teaching Award was given to Mathew Gerard, teaching associate professor of anatomy.
