Ed Smallwod Recipient of Texas A&M Distinguished Alumni Award
Ed Smallwood, retired professor of gross anatomy at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine
& Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Smallwood earned a DVM degree from Texas A&M in 1969 and also has an undergraduate and a graduate degree from the university. He taught anatomy and radiology at Texas A&M until 1981, when he left to join the faculty of what was then NC State University’s new College of Veterinary Medicine. He retired from the Department of Biomedical Sciences in 2013 and was named Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Smallwood is the recipient of numerous teaching awards including election to the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s Faculty Achievement Award, the Texas A&M University Former Students Association Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award, the Norden Distinguished Teacher Award, the NC State University Alumni Distinguished Professor Award, and the UNC Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching.
In 2002, Dr. Smallwood was honored with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association’s Distinguished Veterinarian Award. He served on the board of directors of the North Carolina Physicians’ Health Program and was a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Health Program. From 2003-2013, Dr. Smallwood also served as the College of Veterinary Medicine’s director of alumni relations in addition to his faculty responsibilities. Since 2002, he has been a part-time professor at St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.
Dr. Smallwood served as president of the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, president of the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists and, for 24 years, as national secretary-treasurer of the Phi Zeta Honor Society. He is a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Smallwood is the author of five books, numerous book chapters, more than 30 publications in refereed journals, and 35 other publications. In 2013, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation established and endowed “The Dr. James Edgar Smallwood Endowed Scholarship for Student Excellence.”
Dr. Ed Smallwood receives the 2014 Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award from Dean Eleanor Green.
