Dr.Thakur Receives Faculty Research Award from NC State Chapter of Sigma Xi
Dr. Sid Thakur, assistant professor of swine health and reproduction at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is a recipient of a 2012 Faculty Research Award presented by the NC State Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
The awards program noted that Dr. Thakur has secured more than $1.1 million in research support and has published in 28 journals since coming to the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.
As noted in the Sigma Xi program:
“He was rapidly recognized as an authority in pre-harvest food safety and was appointed as a panel reviewer in a number of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture (NIFA-USDA) programs. According to a USDA scientist, ‘Dr. Thakur provides a unique perspective to young scientists as he is also a veterinarian. We as a profession have talked about “farm to fork” food safety for a number of years. Dr. Thakur lives it.’
“Although Dr. Thakur devotes considerable time and effort to his research, he manages to provide time for mentoring his Ph.D. students. Dr. Thakur contributes to the swine medicine group’s teaching activities and serves as an advisor for a number of veterinary and undergraduate students. It is apparent that Dr. Thakur not only excels in his research, but is also is a well-rounded faculty member.”
Dr. Thakur, who directs the Thakur Molecular Epidemiology Lab, also is the 2012 recipient of the Larry Beuchat Young 
Researcher Award from the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP). The award is presented to a “young researcher who has shown outstanding ability and professional promise in the early years of his or her career in food microbiology/ food safety.” He will officially receive the IAFP award during the organization’s 2012 Annual Meeting, which will be held July 22-25 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Prior to his NC State faculty appointment in 2007, Dr. Thakur was an Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Research Fellow for the Federal Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Thakur received his doctorate in population medicine from the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. He has a master’s degree in Veterinary Science, Veterinary Public Health from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, and a undergraduate degree from in veterinary science and animal husbandry at G.B. Pant University in India.
