Dr. Monteiro-Riviere Recipient of Distinguished Women Scholars Award
Dr. Nancy Monteiro-Riviere, professor of investigative dermatology and toxicology with the Center for Chemical Toxicology Research and Pharmacokinetics at NC State University, is the recipient of the inaugural Purdue University Distinguished Women Scholars Award.
The award, which includes a $2,000 honorarium, honors “alumnae who earned a Purdue doctorate and have made significant scholarly contributions to their academic communities.”
"Nancy Monteiro-Riviere is indeed a distinguished scholar,” says Beverly Davenport Sypher, Purdue’s vice provost for faculty. “By recognizing our academic women of distinction, we also celebrate our faculty’s contributions to mentoring these successful scholars and recognize Purdue’s contribution to diversifying university faculty across the nation. We hope Dr. Monteiro-Riviere will be a role model to all of our women scholars in the making.”
As part of the award ceremony Dr. Monteiro-Riviere will discuss her career achievements, describe her Purdue academic experience, and offer advice to young scholars.
Dr. Monteiro-Riviere, a member of the Department of Clinical Sciences in the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, also is a professor in the Joint University of North Carolina/ NC State Department of Biomedical Engineering, and a research adjunct professor of dermatology at UNC School of Medicine. A Fellow in the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and in the American College of Toxicology, she also is past-president of both the Dermal Toxicology and In Vitro Toxicology Specialty Sections of the National Society of Toxicology.
Dr. Monteiro-Riviere is the associate editor for Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews in Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology and serves on six toxicology editorial boards. She also serves on several national panels, including many in nanotoxicology, such as the National Research Council of the National Academies Committee to Review the Federal Strategy to Address Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Needs for Engineered Nanoscale Materials. She has published more than 245 manuscripts in the field of skin toxicology and is editor of the book “Nanotoxicology: Characterization and Dosing and Health Effects” and Editor of “Toxicology of the Skin–Target Organ Series."
In addition to her master’s and doctorate degree in veterinary anatomy from Purdue’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Monteiro-Riviere completed a postdoctoral fellowship in toxicology at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (now Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences) in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
The award presentation, part of Purdue’s Women’s History Month celebration, is scheduled for March 3 on the university’s West Lafayette campus.
The NC State Center for Chemical Toxicology Research and Pharmacokinetics is part of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
