Dr. McGahan Named ARVO Fellow
Dr. Christine McGahan, head of the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been approved for the honor of “Gold Fellow” in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Fellows Class of 2010.
The title of Gold Fellow is an honor that recognizes association (ARVO) members for their individual accomplishments, leadership, and contributions. Eligibility is determined by a point system established by the Trustees by which members earn points for various types of service to ARVO and participation in ARVO-sponsored activities. Dr. McGahan has been a member of the association for more than 30 years.
According to the award announcement, ARVO anticipates that as a Gold Fellow Dr. McGahan will “continue to serve as a role model and mentor for individuals pursuing careers in vision and ophthalmology research” and will continue to further ARVO’s vision to facilitate the advancement of vision research and the prevention and cure of disorders of the visual system worldwide.
A CVM Professor of Pharmacology, Dr. McGahan is a recipient of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1983 and serves on the Department of Health and Human Services National Eye Advisory Council as one of 12 members charged with making policy recommendations. Her CVM research focus involves the biochemistry of the ocular lens and retina.
With more than 12,600 members in over 80 countries, ARVO is the largest eye and vision research organization in the world. The association is the primary advocate for vision science worldwide and encourages and assists basic and clinical research, training, publication, and knowledge-sharing in vision and ophthalmology.
