CVM Students Travel to Washington D.C. for AVMA Event
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Governmental Relations Division and the Student AVMA organization (SAVMA) hosted the joint 2016 “Legislative Fly-In” initiative that attracted veterinary students and veterinarians to Washington, D.C., for a Feb. 28–March 1 workshop.
The 8th annual event involved a one-day education session by the AVMA Governmental Relations team that introduced workshop participants to the legislative process and briefed them on high-priority federal legislation affecting the veterinary profession.
The workshop participants then had arranged meetings with legislators and their staff members to discuss veterinary legislation including the AVMA opposition to the “Fairness to Pet Owners Act” (H.R.3174/S.1200) which is a federal mandate requiring veterinarians provide clients a written copy of every companion animal prescription, whether or not the client needs or wants it. Also discussed was AVMA support for the re-authorization of the Higher Education Act.
