CVM Student Researchers Participate in Merial–NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium
A contingent of 17 students from NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine participated in the 2012 Merial—National Institutes of Health National Veterinary Scholars Symposium.
More than 500 students and faculty attended the symposium, “Comparative Medicine: Key to Translation,” to hear veterinary and human medical investigators discuss recent advances in translational medicine and to listen to students who participated in the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program present findings from their research projects.
According to the program, the Merial-NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium “brings together outstanding scientists and veterinary scholars who have been engaged in mentored research experiences over the course of the summer in colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada. Veterinary scholars share their research findings in poster sessions and have the chance to hear and interact with scientists from diverse fields.”
The CVM students were accompanied by Dr. Sam Jones, professor of equine medicine who, with Dr. Jody Gookin, associate professor of internal medicine, is co-director of the Veterinary Scholars Program. CVM students involved in the symposium included:

In addition, Dr. Kate Meurs, associate dean for research and graduate studies, led a symposium session titled, “Genomic Analysis of Companion Animal Disease,” that focused on recent advances in identification of gene defects in companion animals with potential implications for human health. The session also featured Dr. Natasha Olby, professor of neurology.
