North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate Megan Inskeep has been named Young Swine Veterinarian of the Year by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.

Dr. Inskeep, CVM Class of 2010, was honored at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Swine Megan InskeepVeterinarians (AASV) in Orlando, FL.  The award is given annually to an AASV member who is five or fewer years into a post-graduation career and who is already demonstrating AASV ideals of exemplary service and proficiency.

Inskeep’s interest in animals began on her grandparents’ dairy farm and through visiting pig farms with her veterinarian father Dr. Gene Nemechek. She also worked in a small animal clinic during high school and spent two summers on sow farms gaining experience in farrowing and gestation barns.

As an animal science undergraduate in the NC State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Inskeep became a Food Animal Scholar and was accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine through the joint mentoring program. She was active in both the Swine Club and the Bovine Club during her four years at the CVM, serving as president of the swine club in her third year. She received the Swine Proficiency Award at the conclusion of her fourth year.

Currently, Inskeep is a veterinarian at Rensselaer Swine Services in Rensselaer, IN, a practice with clients in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Inskeep participated in the National Pork Board’s Operation Main Street as a student presenter and continues her involvement with the program, giving more than 30 presentations to civics groups and high schools. She also hosts veterinary students who are interested in swine veterinary practice and the swine industry.

“I am honored to receive this award, and feel fortunate to be a part of such a remarkable organization and industry,” Inskeep said at the award ceremony.  “I can’t begin to give enough thanks to my family and mentors over the years for their support, and hope that I can give back as much as they have given to me.”

Dr. Randy Jones, NC State CVM Class of 1985 and a previous president of AASV, presented the Young Swine Veterinarian of the Year award to Inskeep.
