Comparative Biomedical Graduate Student Named As Winner of Klein Equine Award
Amanda Ziegler, a graduate student in the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Comparative Biomedical Program, is the 2016 recipient of the Elaine Klein Development Award. The award, presented by the Klein Family Foundation, is valued at $15,000 and assists promising investigators with a one-year salary supplement. This new competitive program is named in honor of renowned horsewoman, Elaine Klein.
Dr. Ziegler’s study “Flunixin and Firocoxib in Post-Surgical Colic Patients”, an investigation she has undertaken in the laboratory of Anthony Blikslager, a professor of equine surgery and gastroenterology at NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, investigates improved drug selection for postoperative colic pain. The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation funded this project.
This research is a multi-institutional effort combining cases from N.C. State, Michigan State and New Bolton Center. A better understanding of drug selections could lead to increased survival rate of surgical colic.
