Foster, Lascelles Awarded Pharmacology Research Grants

Two NC State College of Veterinary Medicine researchers are the only recipients of pharmacology research grants from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Foundation.

Derek Foster, assistant professor of ruminant health and production, received the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Grant for his work exploring the best antibiotic treatment process for cows with mastitis, inflammation of the mammary gland and udder tissue.

In a statement, Foster said the funding was crucial to understanding how to treat the condition while decreasing drug residue in milk.

Duncan Lascelles, professor of small animal surgery and pain management, received the Veterinary Pharmacokinetic Research Grant for his investigations into the use of the drug gabapentin to treat chronic pain in cats.

Lascelles, who directs the CVM’s Comparative Pain Research program, said in a statement that the funding will form the foundation of future research into how the medication may be used to treat a range of feline pain conditions.

The AVMF and VPRF grants support research that combats diseases of companion and food animals, as well as work focusing on the safety of food derived from livestock.

The AVMF is the charitable arm of the American Veterinary Medical Association. THE VPRF was founded by the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology.
